DR Keith Khan once told Steelers chairman Peter Newell he was a big sook for trying to avoid a needle.
But it was the retiring Wollongong GP who fought back tears yesterday as he was honoured at a Lord Mayoral reception acknowledging his 50 years of service to the city.Dr Khan paid emotional tribute to his wife Voda for her support and devotion over his long career. His undying love and appreciation for his wife was obvious to more than 100 people who gathered for the event at Wollongong City Gallery.Dr Khan said being a GP in Wollongong today was vastly different to half a century ago when there were very few specialists.Wollongong Lord Mayor Alex Darling said much had changed since Dr Khan first started working as a doctor and answered after-hours calls from patients who used to tap on the window. The Lord Mayor also acknowledged his work in initiating an after-hours doctors service in the 1970s that today is commonly referred to as the radio doctor."You have been an absolute legend in your career," Councillor Darling said.Mr Newell recalled how Dr Khan had a wonderful rapport with patients."Most regarded him as a friend," he said."He was the best doctor you could ever have."Daughter Jenny Smiley said Dr Khan was truly inspirational as a father, role model, doctor, community member and friend.Dr Khan, 80, retired from his Gwynneville practice on July 30.
