A LAKE ILLAWARRA man who allegedly held a syringe needle to the throat of three bystanders at Bass Point on Sunday has appeared in court.

Police allege Wayde Landmark, 28, of Peterborough Ave, threatened members of the public in an attempt to avoid arrest after being chased by officers who suspected him to be the driver of a stolen car.

Landmark was charged with three counts of detaining a person and occasioning actual bodily harm, assaulting police, using an offensive weapon, two counts of vehicle theft, two counts of disqualified driving and failing to give details to another driver after a collision. He did not enter pleas to any of the charges.

Landmark did not apply for bail yesterday but Legal Aid solicitor Glenda Stares said whilst in custody the defendant was not receiving treatment for his schizophrenia. Magistrate Paul Johnson refused bail due to the serious nature of the offences.

Police allege that about 3.30am on Sunday Landmark stole a Ford Laser which he drove to a beachside park at Kiama from where he stole a Holden Commodore before driving to Bass Point

It is alleged the Commodore collided with a four-wheel drive while travelling east on Old Bass Point Rd causing damage to both vehicles, but the Commodore did not stop. Landmark allegedly dumped the Commodore near Bass Point quarry and ran away from police. A police dog and officers searched the area for Landmark who avoided detention for a short time, threatening officers and bystanders with a syringe.

Police used capsicum spray to subdue Landmark before his arrest.

A 17-year-old girl, one of three females in the Commodore, was arrested and will appear at Port Kembla Court on February 5.

Landmark's case has been adjourned until January 31.
